Letter boxing started on Dartmoor in 1854, and involves hiding a box containing a logbook somewhere accessible and challenging to find. There`s a far newer form of this activity called Geocaching that gives the GPS coordinates to walk to which is now a lot easier (visit www.geocaching.com to find out more - Click Here ! ) whereas letterboxing requires a fair degree of navigational expertise.

MAP: The Peak District Leisure Map No1. Scale 1:25000

The following photos are a guide to the shortest route to the Letter Box with some interesting views and 3 Kms of easy walking up to Arnfield Cabin. The next 2 Kms are up over the moors. Make sure that you a suitably dressed and have a map and compass !! Tip - download some photos to help you. Allow about four hours there and back to Tintwistle.
The Start - SK 0226.9732. Tintwistle war memorial - a suitable place to park. Walk up to the Bull Inn and turn left past the War Memorial and onto Arnfield Lane. Continue to the end of the lane.
From the end of Arnfield Lane continue up the track (Pennine Bridleway) and lookout for a field gate on your right. The view from here is Arnfield Clough with Tintwistle Knarr on the horison.
At the top of the rise the Pennine Bridleway bears left. Here, carry on up the track to the right towards the woods through two field gates.
The track continues up to Arnfield Cabin SK 0302.9942. A good spot for a break with a nice view up Arnfield Clough. You have now walked 3.2 Kms. Now for the navigation ! Set your compass to 24 deg. and head up the moors for 1.1Kms until you reach a stile at SE 0334.0045. (For more photos of Arnfield Clough see page `Peak District Cloughs`).
Looking back to the Cabin from the end of a track leading up the moors.
The cabin is useful for taking a `Back Bearing` before you loose sight of it.
Stile !
The fence and stiles have been removed in these photos. I will post a new bearing from the cabin in the near future.
Here is the Letter Box !
Clue - a small isolated peat hag !
